What type of pipe is legally required underground for gas lines in Scottsdale?

International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) and Scottsdale city codes mandate yellow high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe buried 12 to 18 inches deep with a copper tracer wire. Transitions to above-ground fixtures must use factory-welded steel anodeless risers.

How do you coordinate with Southwest Gas during a high-capacity remodel?

If total household load exceeds your meter's capacity rating (typically 250 to 400 CFH), we calculate the total demand (CFH/BTU), submit engineering plans to the city, and coordinate with Southwest Gas for a heavy-duty meter upgrade.

Arizona Renovation Plumbing FAQs

Do I need a city permit for running a gas line to an outdoor fire pit in Scottsdale❓

Yes. The City of Scottsdale Planning & Development department mandates a plumbing/mechanical permit for all fuel gas extensions. The installation must pass a witnessed 15-minute 10–15 PSI gauge test before gas service is authorized.

Can my existing 1/2-inch gas pipe handle an outdoor kitchen and a fire pit❓

Rarely. A 1/2-inch line cannot supply the simultaneous volume required by modern grills (60,000+ BTUs) and fire pits (up to 150,000 BTUs) over backyard distances. A dedicated 3/4-inch or 1-inch trunk line is usually necessary.

What pipe material is legally required underground for gas lines in Scottsdale❓

City codes mandate yellow high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe buried at a minimum depth of 12 to 18 inches with a continuous copper tracer wire, transitioning above grade via factory-sealed steel anodeless risers.

When should Southwest Gas be contacted during a gas line expansion❓

If total simultaneous appliance demand exceeds your existing meter’s rating (typically 250 or 400 CFH), our engineering team coordinates directly with Southwest Gas to schedule a high-capacity meter upgrade.
